Nathan Funk

Senior Architectural Project Manager, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP

Why did you choose a career in architecture?

My parents tell me I said I wanted to be an architect at the age of 3. I’ve always enjoyed creating things with my hands, and particularly drawing. The art in architecture has always captivated me. My interests are broad, and architecture is a field that requires a curiosity for many different skills and concepts.

For me, architecture is such a gratifying profession because our work results in something so tangible, and each day we’re encouraged to continue to learn and push outside of the box

What is the best design advice you’ve been given?

  1. Draw what you know. The rest comes in layers (layers = lots of trace paper).

  2. Harness the power of a dull pencil or fat Sharpie. You need these lying around for early design sketches.

What is your favorite part of the design process?

For me, it is sketching and solving problems through design. The “puzzle” solving element and creative thinking happens in all aspects of our work.
