We are Via: Meet Emily Mack

We're kicking off a new series for our blog to formally introduce to you the amazing people that make up our team at Via Design. From architects to designers and everyone in-between, we would not function the same without our talented staff. Starting with Emily Mack, Project Manager, and Interior Designer, she joined the Via team in 1994 and has been with us ever since. A lot has changed, but we think her story will inspire you!

How long have you worked at Via?

Since 1994 - After graduating from Michigan State, I moved to Chicago and worked for a furniture store. I then moved back to Grand Rapids, worked at the same store, met Val’s Mom, and then got connected to Via. I was Val's assistant and then just grew up with her and the company as I started slowly getting my clients.

Where did you grow up? Have you always lived in Michigan?

I was born in Grand Rapids but was raised on the East Side of the state since I was a baby. I moved to Chicago for a few years and then made it back here!

What made you choose your profession?

Probably a cumulation of loving the dollhouse my grandpa made, preferring to set up miniature “rooms” instead of playing “house” or “school,” visiting the Thorne Rooms at the Art Institute of Chicago, and being equally in love with art as I was math! I love the balance of “ordered beauty.”

What inspires you in daily life and at work?

I'm inspired by colors, fashion, food, travels, trends, social issues. I love browsing Pinterest and seeing it all. I'm also inspired by watching others take risks and be free to do what they want.

Your favorite hobbies?

Any sport with a racquet along with hiking, cooking, and restoring furniture.

Tell us about your family, any kids/pets?

I have a college-age sophomore daughter at the University of Michigan and a high school sophomore son at East Grand Rapids High School. Also, a Weimaraner named Buck.

What is your life motto/quote?

“If you avoid the conflict to keep the peace, you start a war inside yourself” From Glennon Doyle “Untamed.”

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about design/architecture?

There are fewer rules. Design isn’t as confining as people think. There are so many answers for one problem; you just have to be open-minded. There’s more freedom in creativity.

What does your ideal day look like?

It probably starts with a Nespresso latte, then playing tennis, hiking with friends, trying a new restaurant, shopping at local artisan shops, going to the farmers market, and ending with a glass of wine on my patio.

Your favorite place to eat or drink in Grand Rapids?

I don’t have a favorite, but I recently loved the Old Goat. Super kitschy with GREAT food!
