We had the opportunity to work with Leigh’s ten years ago for their last update and were thrilled to be involved again.
The design intent for this project was to update existing features of the store, and to also provide a welcoming entrance for customers. Valerie Schmieder, Kelly Richardson, and Justin Stone, led the design working with the team from Leigh’s. The general contractors, Triangle Construction, performed some of the work at night so the store could remain open. The Leigh’s team embraced the renovation chaos, decorating mannequins into construction workers and greeting the designers with enthusiasm at each site visit.

During the renovation, Leigh’s had a special visitor: Oprah! She gave them “thumbs up” for the redesign.
The remodel began by knocking out two large walls from within the building to create more transparency from the street, better natural lighting, and a more welcoming space for shoppers to be greeted. Broadloom carpet was removed and replaced with carpet tiles, under which piping was laid running water to the spa at the back of the store. With the help of DeGraaf Interiors the bamboo floors in need of repair after years of exposure to shoes and moving furniture were sanded and resealed giving them shine and new life.
A majority of the existing furniture could be reused after being updated. Tuck Studio refinished the wooden pieces, and our friends at Durant Upholstery reupholstered chairs and sofas. Justin Stone curated existing artwork throughout the store, including paintings by Gretchen Minnhaar and former ArtPrize entries.
One significant detail of this project is the feature wall and cash wrap stations. Faux-Real, LLC. headed by artist Diane Hasso, was brought on to paint a faux finish on a main feature wall as well as niches around the store and the cash wrap stations. Diane and her team worked to perfect a color match with the existing palette of the space. The results were stunning.
The Leigh’s remodel was a perfect example of the range of our services; from providing both interior and architectural design services, to restoring furniture and curating art. We were excited to work with Rebecca and her team at Leigh’s to create a cutting-edge space reflecting the store’s quality and style.
